Brutality against Dalits has become common in India. Atrocities on Dalits are increasing day by day. Somewhere Dalit girls are being raped and somewhere Dalits are being beaten up.
boycott dalits
This incident is from Subhai village of Joshimath district of Uttarakhand state. A dance called Bagdwal is performed every year in this village. Bagdwal dance is a religious dance. A person who plays the dholak is also required in this program. A Dalit person from the village was called to play the dholak but due to illness, that Dalit person could not come to play the dholak, due to which a panchayat was called and that panchayat boycotted the Dalit family. After boycotting, no person from the village will talk to that Dalit person, no shopkeeper will give ration or other goods to that Dalit, that Dalit person will not be able to take water from any tap or well of the village, cannot take his animals to the village pond, cannot take his animals to the village forest. After being boycotted by the Panchayat, that Dalit person no longer has any right over any government or public property. However, on complaining, the police declared this decision of the Panchayat as illegal and started taking action against the Panchayat and the culprits related to it have also been arrested. Such incidents show how low the thinking of people is towards Dalits.
Dalit groom beaten up
This incident is from Madhkarimpur village of Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh. The Dalit man and his family were doing a Ghorchadhi in the village a day before the wedding. Bhim Army’s song was playing in the Ghorchadhi. As soon as the Ghorchadhi passed near the houses of Rajput community, people from the upper caste community made the Dalit man get down from the mare. Those people said that the people of the upper caste did not like the song of Bhim Army, so the Dalit man was made to get down from the mare. The Dalit man was treated indecently and casteist words were used. Many Dalit people including the groom were beaten up. Dalits also alleged that the program was stopped and even all Dalit women were beaten up. Dalits say that we had tried to organize programs in the village earlier also but the people from the upper caste community stopped our programs and beat us up. Dalits say that we do not have our own land, so we stopped rearing animals because we had to go to the farms of upper castes and Rajputs to get fodder for the animals. Dalit women were molested in the fields. Dalit girls were harassed in the fields, so people of the Dalit community stopped rearing animals.
Brutality against innocent Dalit children
This is an incident from Mishtha village in Panna, Madhya Pradesh where innocent children also became victims of casteism. It is said that children are the form of God but even these little gods are mistreated. In government schools, a teacher named Sitaram asks children about their caste and makes them sit separately. Children whom he considers to be of a lower caste are made to sit separately from all the children. Even after 77 years of independence, Dalits have to feel slavery. Those who consider themselves to be of a higher caste teach their children casteism. No matter how educated one becomes in India, the feeling of casteism never ends because casteism is taught to children not only at home but also in school. Any child of a higher caste may not learn anything but he definitely learns casteism.
Every day there are hundreds of incidents of which there are no government records. If a Dalit is mistreated, no one listens to him because most of the government offices are staffed by people from upper castes. Governments have made laws for Dalits but those laws are nothing but pieces of paper. If the laws were good, Dalits would not be mistreated every day. Now the governments will have to think deeply about Dalits so that the condition of Dalits can also improve. If the government is not doing anything, then Dalits will have to fight against the system.
